These are not Hammered coins but very collectable Early Irish…

 

Gun money refers to coinage of James II who minted such coinage (June 1689 to October 1690) during war with William III.  James had no silver to finance the war and so used the bronze from defunct cannon, bells etc. to mint this Gunmoney

coinage.  Unusually the month of issue is shown on the coin as well as year (except for Crowns).


Gunmoney was initially issued in three denominations - Sixpence, Shilling, and Half- crowns.  These were later changed: shillings were minted the size of the original sixpence, half crowns were minted in the size of the original shilling, and crowns were minted in the size of the original half crown.  Some coins were over-struck on the earlier lower denominations of the same size.
